Veterans Protest 10th Anniversary of Afghanistan War
Thursday at Memorial Auditorium as part of Nationwide Demonstrations; Vets will Join OccupySacramento
SACRAMENTO – Veterans here will hold a rally – one speaker will be a former Congressional candidate – here Thursday, Oct. 6 to mark the 10th Anniversary of the Afghanistan War that has caused the death and injury to more than 15,000 Americans and tens of thousands of civilians.
The protest will be held THURSDAY at 10 a.m. at MEMORIAL AUDITORIUM (15th & J St). At 10:30 veterans and antiwar supporters will march to Chavez Park at 10th & J St. to join OccupySacramento.
Two thirds of the people in this country want an end to the war in Afghanistan, according to polls, and the people in Afghanistan are suffering huge civilian casualties – including the murders of many children as the U.S./NATO forces expand the military offensive.
“We want to remind people that this unnecessary conflict still rages, that men and women of our armed forces are still being injured and killed, innocent Afghans are still being injured and killed, our country is suffering financially because of this wasteful war…and it needs to stop now,” said John Reiger, president of Veterans for Peace, Sacramento Chapter.
Dr. Bill Durston, a former congressional candidate who nearly upset Rep. Dan Lungren, will speak. He is Vietnam combat veteran.
