TV Spots Opposing Prop. 14 Airing Statewide for First Time

Posted on 30 May 2010 by Sam Sac

“Proposition 14 is clearly intended to destroy small parties. It creates a closed general election in which only two of the richest candidates would be on the ballot in November, with no more smaller-party or independent candidates, and write-in candidates would be outlawed. This is intended as a coup that overthrows democracy in California.”
- Kevin Akin, Chairman, California Peace and Freedom Party

The first television spots opposing Prop. 14 on the June 8 ballot are now running throughout the state.

Although all six ballot-qualified parties in the state are opposing Prop. 14 – which would severely limit voter choices in major elections – two of the smaller independent parties are the first to mount a targeted mass media campaign.

Around 600 television spots are running in select markets in the San Francisco Bay Area, Los Angeles, and Sacramento. CNN, Headline News and MSNBC were chosen for the coverage.

The spots tell voters “Don’t buy the lie,” because, they say, Prop. 14 would allow only the “two big money politicians” in general elections.

“Proposition 14 is another scheme to hurt the people of California,” said Barry Hermanson, Co-Chair of the California Green Party. “People want more choices, not fewer. Prop. 14 gives us more of the same. It guarantees the jobs of incumbents, who voted to put this on the ballot in the first place. It’s backed by big special interests, who have put the state in the mess it is in today.”
