Debate Investigaton Needed, Lt. Governor Candidate Says

Posted on 29 November 2010 by Alan Gray

Lt. Governor Candidate C.T. Weber is not happy, and he thinks taxpayers and voters should understand what is going on.

Weber says California gubernatorial and U.S. Senate debates that limit participants to only two political parties, and are co-sponsored by non-profit tax exempt organizations (public radio) and/or are hosted by non-profit tax exempt educational institutions may be illegal.

Weber was the Peace and Freedom Party candidate for Lt Governor. He asked the state Attorney General’s Office to open an investigation. “Bi-partisan is not non-partisan…I am asking your office to investigate (and) see if any violations of the law have occurred,” he said.

Weber’s full statement follows:

“I have contacted the (California) Attorney General’s office and asked for an investigation of the Gubernatorial and U. S. Senate debates. These are bi-partisan debates and not non-partisan debates. The debates are co-sponsored by non-profit tax exempt organizations like public radio and hosted by non-profit tax exempt educational institutions.

“I asked the Attorney General to not participate in any further debates that use public air waves unless all six candidates are included. Below is my complaint to the Attorney General’s office. California has 48 ballot qualified candidates from six ballot qualified parties running for the eight statewide races.

“Four candidates, two for U. S. Senate and two for Governor have received most of the publicity thus far. However, there may be not only ethical questions regarding the debates but legal questions as well. These debates have been sponsored by non-partisan tax exempt organizations, such as public radio and hosted by non-partisan tax exempt educational institutions.

“May I remind you that bi-partisan is not non-partisan. Asking your office to issue an unbiased opinion may create a conflict of interest, as you are one of the four candidates receiving preferential treatment.

“However, the investigation must start somewhere; therefore, I am asking your office to investigate these organizations and institutions to see if any violations of the law have occurred. In the interest of fair and open elections, I further request that you refuse to participate in any other debates over the public airwaves unless all six candidates are invited to participate.”

Non-Profits That Sponsor Limited Political Debates May Violate Law

California gubernatorial and U.S. Senate debates that limit participants to only two political parties, and are co-sponsored by non-profit tax exempt organizations, such as public radio, or are hosted by non-profit tax exempt educational institutions may be illegal.

Lt. Governor Candidate C.T. Weber thinks that is the case. Weber, the Peace and Freedom Party candidate for Lt Governor, last week asked the state Attorney General’s Office to open an investigation. “Bi-partisan is not non-partisan…I am asking your office to investigate (and) see if any violations of the law have occurred,” he said.
